Prepare the walls - Before you get started with wallpaper removal, you need to remove everything from the walls. Not needing to work around clocks, paintings, or other decor will make the process much easier. Protect the floor & outlets - The easiest way to protect the outlets is to remove the covers and cover the rest completely, but the lower level is a bit more complicated. You want to avoid having water drip down behind the molding, so it’s important to do a thorough job when you cover the molding and the floor in the room where you’re doing wallpaper removal. Peel the facing off - The goal of this step is to pull off the first layer of the wallpaper and leave the backing on the wall. By leaving just the backing on the wall you create a surface that is much more absorbent than the space you started with. Wet down the backing to make the paste soft - As you wet down the backing of the wallpaper, the paste used to hold the wallpaper in place will get softer. The softer the paste, the easier the final steps of the wallpaper removal process will be. Strip off the backing - By removing the backing, you are preparing the walls to remove the wallpaper paste. The paste requires more products to remove, so we must get down to just the paste. Use gel stripper to remove paste - The paste is very hard to remove, but don’t give up. You’ll want to start by removing as much of the paste that you can with a knife. Follow this step by running water over the walls with a sponge. Then spray the wall with a mist of water and scrape off as much of the remaining paste as you can. The last attempt to finish removing the paste is gel stripper, which you spray on any remaining spot, let it sit for 15 minutes and then remove it. Sand & prime the walls smooth - After the paste is removed, you have completed the wallpaper removal process. The next order of business is to patch any holes, sand down the walls, and then paint on the primer to prepare for the room to be painted.
